Morbid Obesity – Causes, Cure, and Threats

Tuesday Mar 30, 2010

Obesity becomes morbid when it reaches the point of significantly increasing the risk of one or more obesity-related health conditions or serious diseases (also known as co-morbidities) that result either in significant physical disability or even death.

The term morbid obesity, also called “clinically severe obesity” or “class-3” obesity – is a disease of excess body fat (adipose tissue), which can adversely affect general health, mobility and quality of life. Morbid obesity is typically defined as being 100 lbs. or more over ideal body weight or having a Body Mass Index of 40 or higher. According to the National Institutes of Health Consensus Report, morbid obesity is a serious disease and must be treated as such. It is a chronic disease, meaning that its symptoms build slowly over an extended period of time.

Morbid obesity is a significant risk factor for hypertension, cardiovascular disease, some cancers, diabetes, respiratory problems and musculo-skeletal disorders. Generally, the health threats of morbid obesity are: double risk of early death if your weight is more than twice your ideal, 5-7 times greater risk of death from diabetes or heart attack, high risk of “end-stage” (untreatable) obesity, numerous negative social, psychological and economic effects.

The causes of severe clinical obesity remain complex and varied, and typically include factors such as family genetic history, lifestyle and eating habits in childhood and adolescence, medication usage, calorie-intake, mood/depression, degree of physical activity, and cultural, socioeconomic and psychosocial factors. Although there are several clearly identifiable causes and contributory risk factors for morbid obesity, experts have been unable to pinpoint the relative importance of these risk factors in the ongoing obesity epidemic.

Treatment for morbid obesity usually includes a combination of liquid or very-low-calorie diets, weight loss medications and exercise counseling. Patients suffering from significant co-morbid conditions may also qualify for bariatric weight loss surgery such as gastric banding or stomach bypass.

Mildly obese patients can benefit from diet and exercise treatments, sometimes provided in conjunction with weight loss medication. Patients with morbid obesity, especially those with serious co-morbid conditions, may qualify for bariatric surgical treatments such as Lap Band or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Lap-band adjustable gastric banding is the latest entrant (approved by the FDA in 2001) in the sphere of surgical treatment of morbid obesity

It has become increasingly clear that those with morbid obesity may not be able to get their weight under significant control on their own without surgery. If you are morbidly obese you run a significant risk of dying prematurely due to your weight. In fact, those with morbid obesity can be expected to die 13-20 years prematurely unless they can lose most of their excess weight.

Erectile Dysfunction Herbs – The All Natural Cure!

Monday Mar 29, 2010

With the economy dropping and medicine prices spiking would certain herbs be considered as an alternative for erectile dysfunction treatment?

Erectile dysfunction treatment (ED) is the inability of a man to achieve and maintain erection during sex. And though there are different erectile dysfunction treatments out there, clinics and laboratories still try to come up with herbal remedies to introduce in the market since erectile dysfunction is not usually covered in health cards.

If you’re not into prescribed drugs or injections and if therapists intimidate you then this would be good suggestions for you to think about. Here are some of the herbal remedies still being tested. Since Food and Drug Administrative haven’t given official approval to these herbs yet, it’s better to consult your physician first before trying anything.

· Gingko. A herb that can be found at Zhejiang province in Eastern China. This is the herb used by those who suffers from sexual dysfunction, or those who suddenly lost their libido. It helps the smooth muscles in the penis to relax and increase blood flow.

· Tongkat Ali. You can find this herb in Eurycoma Longifolia Jack or Pasak Bumi Indonesia. It increases the testosterone on your body level. The young plants of this herb is not recommended for medical remedies but the older roots (at least 10 years old) are believe to have real effect. The increase level of testosterone can improve one’s sex drive and have a longer, harder and more natural erection.

· Tribulus Terrestris. This is a flowering plant that’s native in the soils of southern Europe. It can also be found in southern Asia, northern Australia and almost all over Africa. Like the other herbs mentioned above, Tribulus Terrestris, commonly called as Yellow Vine, can help in sexual stimulation. It can enhance and lengthen penile erection.

· Ashwagandha. This is also known as the Winter Cherry and grows productively in India and Pakistan as well as in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It is considered as a potent aphrodisiac thus it enhances sexual drives and long lasting endurance. It also helps increase sperm counts and improves its quality.

Keep in mind that these herbal remedies also have serious side-effects. Gingko can cause headache, dizziness, skin reactions and even gastrointestinal upset. Tongkat Ali can also cause skin irritation, redness and soreness. Tribulus Terrestris can cause stomach upset and headaches. And as for ashwagandha it can cause constant drowsiness.

It’s true these herbal remedies can be considered as erectile dysfunction treatment. But you also have to put everything side by side to weigh and perceive the right treatment for you. Sporadic erectile dysfunction is normal. But if erectile dysfunction becomes a recurring problem then visit a doctor before trying self erectile dysfunction treatment. Talk it over with your doctor; ask about herbal medicines and supplements. With his/her expertise and your medical history you can come up with the correct erectile dysfunction treatment that suits your body.

Allergies Treatments – Allergy Relief

Sunday Mar 28, 2010

Almost 40 percent of the human population will suffer from allergies at some point in their lives. Allergies can come from various sources. This being the case, it is not quite easy to come up with a single treatment plan that covers every type of allergy, most allergies are acquired after birth. Allergy relief can be found in many different shapes and forms of medications, both those available over the counter at your local drugstore or pharmacy or those that are prescribed by your physician. The best solution to avoid triggering allergies is to avoid coming in contact with the specific allergen that affects the individual.

Antihistamines

All antihistamines block most of histamines effects by competing at histamine receptor sites thereby preventing them from producing an effect on the tissues. Antihistamine drugs prevent, but can’t reverse, histamine responses. Some of the general uses of antihistamines include relief from nausea and vomiting, relief from motion sickness, and relief from coughs. Usually antihistamines are administered orally since they are well absorbed in the intestinal tract, or topically, although a few can be given intravenously. To maintain a therapeutic dose, these medicines are given two to four times per day because the liver rapidly metabolizes them. Most over the counter antihistamines used in allergy relief prove effective, yet they may make you sleepy. It’s very important not to use allergy relief medications while driving if you find that you’re sensitive to drowsiness.

One of the most popular treatments for seasonal allergies is Claritin allergy medication. It’s usually used to treat an allergy to pollen, which is commonly known as hay fever. Claritin is an antihistamine and works by relieving the symptoms. These symptoms include; Itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sore throat, coughing and headache.

Vitamin C

Very effective at fighting allergies. Vitamin C helps to reduce the level of antihistamines in the body. When you have an allergic reaction, your body’s immune system reacts by producing an enormous amount of antihistamines to fight the aberrant allergen. It’s the histamines that cause all of the various types of irritation and inflammation that make us uncomfortable or that could kill us. Vitamin C can slow down the reaction giving you time to get medical attention in the event of a serious reaction.

Bioflavonoids such as Quercetin work well with Vitamin C as an anti-histamine to tackle allergens.

Air Purifiers

Air purifiers for allergies may not solve all your allergy problems, however, most will certainly help alleviate some of the congestion and breathing problems often associated with allergies.

Heavy Metal Detox

Most common reason why allergy treatment fails is heavy metal toxicity. Diseases associated with metal toxicity include allergy, autism, Alzheimer’s, Epilepsy, Crone’s Disease, irritable bowel syndrome and others. Detoxifying the body of these pollutants is very important. The great benefits of a detox program are better skin, more energy, bowel movements that are more regular and overall higher levels of performance and concentration.

Erectile Dysfunction Quackery

Saturday Mar 20, 2010

Extravagant promises of “instant recovery” and “increased virility” from questionable medications and treatments, claiming to cure male impotence, are nothing new to those seeking a cure for sexual dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction quackery is as old as impotence itself.

And despite efforts by government bodies to crack down on such fraudulent practices, it appears they are here to stay.

Let the buyer beware.

The following cautionary warning, written in 1885, appeared in the 6th edition of a book entitled, “Manhood Perfectly Restored – A Quick, Painless, and Certain Cure For Impotence and Lost Manhood.”

The writer, in promoting his own healing remedies, warns the reader of fraud, imcompetence and naivety, and what we might call in today’s marketplace “erectile dysfunction quackery.”

“THE FALLACY OF CHEAP REMEDIES”

There are many men who are affected more or less seriously with Diseases of the Sexual Organs who are constantly on the look-out for so-called cheap remedies, and in the course of a few years manage to spend upon these cheap and trashy medicines and appliances twice or three times as much money as would have been necessary to thoroughly cure them.

And what have they got to show for it?

Nothing-absolutely nothing, aye, even worse than nothing, i.e., positive injury to the organs, for, in nine cases out of ten, these cheap, clap-trap potions, by over stimulating, imitating and often inflaming the organs, do them actual harm, hasten and aggravate the disease and leave the patient in a much worse condition than if he had taken no treatment at all.

How often have we had cases referred to us for diagnosis and treatment, where irreparable injury had been done by wrong treatment.

Some were in such a state that no treatment, however excellent, could possibly help them; in others we have had to labor for months to eliminate these poisonous medicines from the system and get the Sexual Organs into proper condition to admit of a restorative treatment.

In still others the effect of our usually quick and thorough-going remedies were delayed and interfered with by the ignorance or botchwork of some quack or bungler, or the well-meant but stupid doctoring of some “family physician” who thinks himself competent to treat these diseases.

No more delicate, complicated or easily injured or disarranged piece of mechanism than the Sexual Organs exists.

In health, they must be treated with care and reason-in disease, with the utmost circumspection.

This branch of medicine, least of all, should be the parade ground of ignorance, carelessness or false economy.

A man’s very health, life, happiness and vigor, his power to procreate his species, to perpetuate his name, his ability to make his wife happy and his children strong and vigorous, all depend upon the treatment he selects.

What is worth doing at all is worth doing well, and he who jeopardizes health and happiness, present and future, on the mistaken basis of false economy, is far from wise.

Everything has a value. If a man offers to sell to another a gold watch worth $150 for $5, you would at once set him down as an impostor, and the watch as injured or worthless or fraudulent.

Yet there are thousands of men who try to find for a few dollars a remedy for a most serious and complicated disease.

In medicine, as elsewhere, Common Sense plays an important part. Such remedies cannot possibly do what is claimed for them.

Reputable, honest men, educated and skilled physicians who have spent thousands of dollars in obtaining a proper medical education, cannot afford to waste their time for such slight remuneration.

Hence, unscrupulous scoundrels, who have no reputations either to make or lose, who make most glaring promises in their printed matter, who are willing to guarantee anything to anybody, infest this field.

They know how great is man’s cupidity, and trade upon it willingly, caring nothing for the consequences.

We hold out no False Hopes.

We cure where a Cure is Possible.

Take Precautions Before Using the Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Drug

Monday Mar 15, 2010

In August 2003, the US FDA approved Levitra vardenafil as an erectile dysfunction treatment drug. Like Viagra, Levitra also belongs to a class of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors and therefore both the medicines work the same way. Levitra vardenafil helps men with impotence get sufficiently long and firm erections in response to sexual stimulation. However, the long-awaited competitor to Pfizer’s blockbuster drug Viagra, Levitra was hailed better than Viagra in several studies as it remains effective in the body for a longer time, has fewer side effects and is safe for patients with heart diseases.

Marketed by pharmaceutical giants Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline, Levitra vardenafil is a prescription only drug for erectile dysfunction treatment. Levitra is not a recreation drug that any man can take to experience a sexual high. Like any other prescription medicines, Vardenafil also comes with certain side effects and is contraindicated in few conditions. Hence before using Levitra one should take proper precautions. Always take Levitra vardenafil only if you have erectile dysfunction and after consultation with a doctor.

Define Levitra vardenafil

Vardenafil is the active ingredient in the impotence treatment pill. Like Viagra sildenafil, Levitra vardenafil is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE-5). Levitra vardenafil helps to smooth the muscles in the penis which in turn increases blood flow to the penis, allowing men suffering from impotence to get and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. When the sexual activity gets over, the blood flow to the penis decreases and the penis returns to its normal state.

It may be noted that Levitra vardenafil does not work on its own. Sexual stimulation is required to cause an erection. Once taken, Levitra becomes effective within 60 minutes and remains in the body for about 5 hours.

The advantage of Levitra is that it is very selective in attacking PDE-5 and works without affecting other isoenzymes. This allows a smaller dose of vardenafil to have the same effect as a larger dose of Viagra (an average Levitra dose is 10mg while an average Viagra dose is 50mg), even though the two drugs belongs to the same class of medicines and hence essentially function the same way.

Precautions to take before using Levitra vardenafil

Levitra vardenafil is a prescription only erectile dysfunction treatment medicine. If not taken with care, Levitra can be dangerous for you. Ensure you have taken proper precautions before using Levitra. Listed here are precautions to take before using Vardenafil:

The foremost precaution is never to use Levitra without first discussing it with your doctor. Understand all the side effects associated with the medicine and talk about your medical conditions and medicines you may be taking. Depending on your condition, your doctor may adjust vardenafil dosage for you or may prescribe you a separate treatment. Do not use Levitra if you are allergic to any of its components. Since some element of cardiac risk is involved in sexual activity, hence while discussing Levitra treatment tell your doctor if you suffer from cardiovascular diseases including high or low blood pressure, arrhythmia or angina. Levitra is not recommended for men with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Levitra vardenafil is to be used with caution in patients using alpha-blocker medicines used in heart ailments. Discuss your penis condition with your doctor and inform him if you suffer from pain in your groin or when you urinate. Let your doctor know if you have any physical symptoms including any change to the shape and size of your testicles or your penis. Also discuss if you have a history of painful/prolonged erection (priapism), sickle cell anemia etc. Use of Levitra may cause dizziness or vision changes. Hence while using Levitra one should use caution while driving or while using machinery or while engaging in any other activity that requires mental alertness. To reduce dizziness, it is advised that one should limit alcohol consumption while using Levitra. Since Levitra and other medicines in its class may cause vision changes such as increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision, it is important to discuss if you are suffering from night blindness, tunnel vision or other eye problems with a genetic origin. Let your doctor know if you suffer from liver or kidney disease. Levitra vardenafil should never be used by women or children. Caution is advised while using Levitra vardenafil treatment in elderly as they are sensitive to the side effects of the drug.

Weight Loss With Thyroid Disease – Mission Impossible?

Monday Mar 8, 2010

As it is, losing weight is a challenge that a lot of people cannot seem to overcome with passing marks. After all, it takes a lot of discipline to stick to a weight loss regimen and adjust one’s diet accordingly. There are just a lot factors hindering one’s ability to get back in shape such as the temptation of that very tasty steak, or the lack of time for proper exercise.

But what if the hindrance is internal? The challenge gets tougher.

The problem within

There are several health conditions that could hinder a person’s ability to lose weight. Weight loss with thyroid disease added into the mix can be a tough nut to crack. A person may have all the discipline in the world to follow those complicated diet plans but if his body cannot control his hormones, then all those efforts would be for nothing.

Thyroid conditions like hypothyroidism can cause weight gain in patients. The thyroid secretes hormones mainly for the modulation of carbohydrates and for fat metabolism among other things. When the thyroid glands are incapable of producing enough hormones, the body balance gets affected which then results in weight gain. At first, this condition looks like a host of other diseases so it’s difficult to diagnose.

Patients suffering from this disease find it difficult to lose weight because their hormones simply are not cooperating with their diet regimen. A special plan for weight loss for people with thyroid disease is then designed to adjust to the body’s hormonal imbalance.

To add insult to injury, there are even some drugs that used to treat thyroid disease that can actually cause weight gain. Weight loss with thyroid disease becomes a never-ending dilemma of split priorities. The patient wants to be treated for the disease but he also wants to lose the excess weight because of other health conditions that may result from it.

Overcoming the challenge of weight loss with thyroid disease

Weight loss with thyroid disease added as a hindrance isn’t as easy as simple calorie restriction. The hormonal imbalance renders diet plans to burn calories useless. This is why exercise is so important in weight loss with thyroid disease patients. Exercise will help them increase their body metabolism and burn calories in the process. Aside from that, it lowers down the body’s insulin levels which can also affect one’s blood sugar level. Normally, twenty minutes of exercise, thrice a week is sufficient but for people with thyroid diseases, they need to do much more.

Since there are some medications that could cause the weight gain, it is advised that patients talked to their doctors regarding possible alternatives. That way, the efforts for weight loss with the thyroid disease in hand will not go to waste.

The right kind of exercise

There are a lot of exercise plans out there that should be able to help burn calories effectively. But to go through weight loss with thyroid disease, the best kind of exercise to do would be the muscle building type. Building lean muscles enables the body to burn more calories and continue to do so even when it is idle. Besides, replacing fats with muscles in itself means burning calories which is why it is so effective.

Water therapy and fiber-rich diet

Another way to increase one’s metabolism is by drinking lots of water. Water makes the body work more efficiently. It can also decrease the appetite, eliminate water retention and do wonders on the digestive process.

Even under normal conditions, one of the most effective ways to lose weight is through a healthy diet. To promote weight loss with the thyroid disease still in the picture, patients should get rid of processed foods, chips and sweets and replace them with organic vegetables and fruits. It also helps to eat a lot of fiber-rich food to enhance the body metabolism. Go for chicken and fish for protein sustenance instead of red meat to regulate fat intake.

Eating frequently and in very small amounts can also help regulate one’s weight. Instead of eating thrice a day, go for eating snack-sized amounts of food four to five times within the day. This would also help moderate the appetite and do away with the hungry sensation that could cause overeating.

Weight loss with thyroid disease shouldn’t be a difficult feat once the patient learns to adapt a well regulated lifestyle.

How To Choose The Right Weight Loss Aids

Tuesday Mar 2, 2010

The latest craze to be sweeping the USA for those who are trying to lose weight is that they are choose to use herbal weight loss aids. The reason for this is that they are actually supposed to help a person lose the weight more quickly and they are only required to make a few alterations to their current dietary habits. However, if you are seriously thinking about using such aids with your weight loss goals it is advisable that you talk to your doctor first. This is because although there are plenty of herbal supplements one can use to lose weight not all have been tested to ensure that not only do they work but they are safe to use.

When it comes to choosing which herbal supplement you should use it is crucial you know exactly what is you are putting into your body. Unfortunately, a great many of the herbal supplements are not governed or regulated in the same way as more conventional medications you take are. So it leaves us in somewhat of a quandary as to what is legal and what is not.

What you will soon find out is that a large number of the supplements you can take as a weight loss aid may contain several different ingredients rather than just one. Therefore if you are thinking about taking any of these supplements then it is vital that you know exactly what you are taking and what affect they may have on you. You also need to be aware that they may have some adverse affect in relation to other medication which you are also taking.

It is important that you should note there is no quick fix solution that one is able to use when it comes to losing weight and you could well be putting yourself at risk using such supplements in order to do so. As mentioned previously many of these have not under gone the same kinds of tests that other conventional medications have to so you are unlikely to know until you start using them if they are going to cause you a problem or not. Also you have no real guarantee other than the word of the manufacturer that their product really does work. Plus although you may find that each manufacturer is using the same kinds of ingredients in their supplements the quantities of each ingredient will vary from one manufacturer to the next.

If you are going to use any kind of herbal aid as part of your weight loss program then you should only purchase them from a reputable source. A good place to start is at your local health food store as they will be able to recommend the ones that should be used and those that you should be avoiding.

If you really want to lose weight safely and effectively then you need to make changes to your diet and include an exercise program as well. In many cases doctors will say that the only really good way to lose weight is by having a sensible diet and exercise program set up. Some doctors may well allow you to use supplements as part of your weight loss program but not only them and one of the safest of these is green tea.

There is however one question that you should be asking yourself before you use any kind of weight loss supplement. The question is “do you think that they really will help you?” Yes some of the supplements available can help a person to lose weight, but there are plenty more that don’t. Also remember there is no current scientific evidence available which clearly states whether these can help you lose that weight.

Therefore, when purchasing any kind of weight loss aids you should do so carefully. Also discuss the matter with your doctor before you actually start using any kind of supplement as part of a weight loss program to ensure that what you are using is healthy.

Understanding Allergy Sinus Relief

Saturday Feb 27, 2010

Getting allergy sinus relief begins with understanding sinus problems. A lot of sinus victims confuse its symptoms with cold and for a good reason, they are quite similar – itchy watery eyes, runny nose – this may translate into a serious sinus infection, sinus allergies or even worse a combination of both.

What are sinuses? Sinuses are four hollow spaces also known as para-nasal sinuses. Their individual names and location is: frontal – Over the eyes next to the brow area; sphenoids – Upper region of the nose; ethmoids – Behind the bridge of the nose; maxillary – Inside each check bone.

The tissue lining in the sinuses secrets a fluid called mucus. The mucus keeps the sinuses moist and helps clean away dirt when you inhale and exhale. When this tissue gets inflamed increases mucus discharge. They swell up with time and air cannot circulate as normal. This in turn creates pressure in the head giving you headache known as sinus headache.

What are the common symptoms of sinus allergy? Sinus allergy may produce a range of symptoms, some of which are: pain in the forehead, caused by the frontal sinus; pain in the ear, neck and the top of the head, caused by sphenoid sinus; pain in the upper jaw and teeth, caused by maxillary sinus; pain around the eyes with swelling, caused by ethmoid sinus.

You may also experience fever, fatigue, and body ache. Sinuses draining at the back of the throat can give you a sore throat also cough may be present which will worsen during the night. At this point, one will do anything for allergy sinus relief.

To get allergy sinus relief you have to first and foremost unblock your sinuses or nasal passages. Over the counter decongestants are usually very efficient. If you have chronic sinus allergies the doctor may prescribe something more specific, such as a steroid nasal spray; using the spray daily will help get you allergy sinus relief.

Another very important factor in dealing with allergy sinus relief is to keep your doctor informed so he can recognize your condition and treat you with the right medication. This will not only get you allergy sinus relief but your doctor will work with you to prevent any outbreaks.

One should also get informed on everything there is to know about allergy sinus relief and prevention. Preventing is better then a cure; it will save you a lot of pain and suffering that is for sure.
