How to Treat Erectile Dysfunction?

Tuesday Mar 30, 2010

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an especially tricky issue for men to be concerned with. Not that the issue cannot be treated, but due to the fact that men suffering from it often feel too humiliated to seek medical attention. There are numerous reasons why one may be suffering from ED. Below we discuss a few questions a doctor may begin with in order to uncover the real cause of the issue.

There are numerous ‘reactions’ happening simultaneously in the human mind and while an erection is being achieved. Every time any of these reactions does not happen or something hinders it from happening completely, ED results. An erection is started off initially by nerve signals within the body. These signals is first triggered off in the human brain, then travels down the spine to the area of male genital. Disruptions to this process may be either physical, psychological or both.

Physical reasons causing erectile dysfunction may include injuries to muscles, arteries and tissues around the penis. There are also symptoms and conditions that might advance to to these physical problems. If one is suffering from kidney trouble, atherosclerosis (a vascular disease), diabetes, alcoholism, and neurological illnesses, he might suffer from erectile dysfunction. These symptoms account for approximately seventy percent of cases of men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Those with physical conditions caused by obesity and excessive smoking may too have an additional effect to this issue.

If one is taking medication for depression, hypertension , or ulcer, there might be a possibility of having a side effect due to medication, occurrences of ED. In this case, the best solution is to see your doctor and let him rule out that these medications are a real cause of erectile dysfunction. A change of medication might just be the remedy to this problem

There are also numerous psychological reasons that cause ED. These may account for approximately twenty percent of erectile dysfunction cases. If a man is feeling constantly stressed, depressed, with a sense of low self-esteem or if he is feeling frustrated over his sexual performance, it is highly likely that he is suffering from this condition. It is required to get hold of the root cause or source of erectile dysfunction for the correct treatment to be given . If the root cause is purely psychological, paying a visit to a trained psychologist on the problems of erectile dysfunction would be the first step to lower the pressure and frustration of this man. A action strategy to tackle these psychological root causes can help go a long way in relieving the frustrations centered on one’s sexual performance.

Nowadays, it has become a normal thing to discuss about erectile dysfunction and the root causes of this issue. It has lead to many state-of-the-art remedy plans to correct the problem. At present, there are medication and devices which work to correct the problems. Doctors, at this point in time, are able to improve blood flow to the penis with the aid of these devices and medication.

Erectile Dysfunction and Diabetes – The Surprising Link!

Thursday Mar 25, 2010

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is often symptomatic of another illness or condition, which in itself needs to be diagnosed and treated as a matter of priority. Some of these conditions, if left undiagnosed and untreated could even be life threatening. Diabetes is one such condition.

The actual cause of erectile dysfunction through Diabetes is quite complex and relates to various changes that take place in the body over a period of time. These changes are in relation to the functions of nerves, blood vessels, and muscles and occur as a direct result of high blood sugar.

In order to gain an erection, men need good healthy blood vessels and nerves, so if these have been damaged through the diabetes, it becomes more likely that erectile dysfunction will appear. It doesn’t matter if the man’s testosterone levels are high, or even if he has a strong libido, harm to the blood vessels and nerves that feed the blood supply the penis will result in erectile dysfunction.

Diabetic men of 50 years of age and over have a 60% chance of acquiring ED. For diabetic men of 70 and over, this statistic jumps to a staggering 95%. It is further believed that men who suffer from diabetes develop erectile dysfunction some 10 to 15 years earlier than men who are not diabetics.

There are a number of other factors that can have a bearing on ED for diabetic men, and just like their non-diabetic counterparts, these factors include: obesity; smoking; life style (lack of appropriate exercise); surgery, and medications including antidepressants and some hypertension medications.

There are also a number of psychological factors (again shared in common with non-diabetics) than can also have a bearing on the causes of ED, and these include: depression; low self esteem; anxiety, and paranoia regarding poor sexual performance.

If you are a man suffering from ED brought about by Diabetes, you should be aware that the damage being done to your blood vessels and nerves can effect your heart and other organs as well as your penis.

Fortunately, there are supplements on the market that will minimize this damage. Along with lifestyle changes, these changes can have a profound effect on your erectile dysfunction, your overall health, and your quality of life.

What is Causing Your Erectile Dysfunction?

Saturday Mar 20, 2010

All erectile dysfunction is manageable. Do not give up. I will start with the commonest causes of erectile dysfunction as are presenting to me in my clinic on a daily bases. I will then mention all the other causes of ED in order of their frequency of occurrence.

(1) Performance Anxiety. This is the commonest cause for a man failing to achieve or sustain an erection of sufficient quality to satisfy the needs of either party engaged in sexual activity. It is caused by negative thoughts blocking the flow of pleasurable arousal and desire that leads to an erection. It is NOT the man’s fault. It is NOT his partner’s fault. It is NOT just in the mind and it takes time and patients to cure. Sometimes the use of a medication like Cialis, taken for a few weeks, can help return confidence. Other than that, pleasuring, without the challenge of intercourse for a few weeks, is the way forwards. This of course requires your being in a steady relationship.

(2) Arteriosclerosis. This means the narrowing of the blood vessels to the penis preventing the flow of sufficient blood to bring about an erection. Typically it effects older men and often it will have other manifestations like coronary artery disease or angina pectoris. It usually can be managed with medications like Viagra but occasionally the addition of Testosterone Replacement Therapy or penis injection may have to be considered

(3) Medications and Drugs. All illicit drugs like the opiates, cannabis and cocaine can all lead to erectile dysfunction. Alcohol and nicotine too can contribute to ED. In addition to these many prescription medications like the beta-blockers, H2 antagonists but most particularly the newer antidepressants and antipsychotics can quickly lead to the development of erectile dysfunction. The solution to this is to discontinue all such drugs and medications. If this can’t be done then penis injection may be the only solution.

(4) Any Chronic Illness. Diabetes type 1 or 2, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s Disease and so on can lead to the development of ED. The solution here will take some working out with a specialist but Testosterone Replacement Therapy again may have a role to play.

(5) History of Prostate Surgery. Surgery for BPH or so-called TURPS, prostatectomy for cancer or any aggressive pelvic surgery can give rise to erectile dysfunction. Again, the solution here will require some expert intervention but may well involve penis injection with Caverject or some such.

The bottom line is that almost all erectile dysfunction is manageable and indeed studies have shown that as much as two thirds of all erectile dysfunction will resolve itself in time and without any medical intervention.

Erectile Dysfunction Almost Destroyed My Marriage

Monday Mar 8, 2010

If you are struggling through life suffering from the humiliation and embarrassment of erectile dysfunction, you will relate to my story.

The beginning of my sex life was awesome. No problem getting an erection and sustaining it. In fact, I had a fairly active sex life for most of my life. I married later in life than most people do, so I guess I had more than my fair share of sexual encounters.

I had an English girlfriend who was sexually demanding. It was not a problem because at that point in time I was happy and able to oblige. The relationship went on for three years without a sexual problem but I guess that’s all we had going on so eventually we parted.

There was a string of other relationships. I didn’t ever have a problem sexually except occasionally I was too fast and got the odd complaint of dissatisfaction. But generally I was complimented, especially, after a few drinks. I have never suffered from Brewer’s Droop, and therefore have been able to provide a good performance with plenty of sexual energy and endurance.

Another girlfriend from New Zealand had a healthy sexual appetite. We had a five year relationship which remained sexually active but we did have some problems of incompatibility.

I am relating these chapters in my life to reinforce that I was sexually active until erectile dysfunction struck. It was devastating. I have never experienced anything that has crushed my manhood, and humiliated me as much as impotence. I always thought it was a possible sexual dysfunction experienced by much older people but apparently around half of all men over forty years of age suffer from erectile dysfunction. If you are one of the millions, I sincerely sympathise.

I am going to relate some more of my relationships that were sexually rewarding before mentioning my humiliating experience. Then I will gleefully rant and rave about a natural cure for sexual dysfunction that worked for me. It not only restored my sex life but it actually improved it.

I still think about one of the cutest girlfriends I ever had. She was drop dead gorgeous, a mix of Maltese and Australian. Another sexually demanding Arabian girlfriend did not complain. Then an Australian girlfriend was completely satisfied. A French girlfriend was always happy. A Chinese girlfriend was always pleased. And not a single sign of looming erectile dysfunction.

Then I married. My wife was young and beautiful. She enjoyed sex. We have three gorgeous kids. Our sex life continued with great satisfaction, for many years, then suddenly I lost the ability to get an erection. I loved my wife, and still felt very close and attracted but for some reason I lost the ability to perform sexually. We tried to ignore the problem but it didn’t go away. My wife was sexually frustrated. She started flirting with other guys. I knew my marriage could be ruined.

I was stupid just thinking about myself and my problem. Erectile dysfunction had become our problem. I had to find a solution. I found it difficult to talk about erectile dysfunction so I avoided speaking with a doctor. Eventually I took a look on the net, and came up with a lot of offers to cure erectile dysfunction. I dislike synthetic medication so I typed in ‘natural herbal cure for erectile dysfunction’ and got the result I needed.

Soon after, I had in my possession the perfect sexual enhancer with the ability to cure my problem. Now my wife is very happy, and so am I. Our relationship has been restored. Actually, it has been re-ignited, sex has never been better. And the amazing thing is that I stumbled across these herbal sex pills that happened to have the right combination of herbs and root extracts that not only cured my problem, but dramatically enhanced our sex lives.

I have to confess I have tried several sexual enhancers since discovering the benefits, and believe me they are all different. Synthetic sex pills gave me a number of side effects such as flushes, nasal congestion, nausea, headache and chest pain.

Synthetic pills are effective in producing an erection of the penis, but unlike the herbal equivalent, they are not designed to increase libido or enhance sexual activity. Synthetic pills take much longer than herbal remedies to take effect.

I have found that herbal sex pills actually prolong my sexual activity, sustain hard erections even after ejaculation, increase my energy levels, and enlarge the length and thickness of my penis for fuller penetration.

The natural herbal sex pills that I recommend have been produced from age-old herbal recipes that are a combination of natural herbs and root extracts. Unlike synthetic sex pills, herbal cures for erectile dysfunction are chemical-free, and free from side effects.

Look for natural herbal sexual enhancers that include Tongkat Ali, the most potent natural herbal aphrodisiac known to man. Ginkgo Biloba, a herb that improves the flow of oxygen to the brain. Horny Goat Weed, an aphrodisiac with the ability to heal impotence. Xanthoparmelia Scabrosa seeds which extend the duration of an erection. Cnidium Monnier, an aphrodisiac that relaxes the muscles around the penis resulting in a full sustainable erection, and Tribulus Terristris, an herbal aphrodisiac that induces bigger and harder erections.

I have found through personal experience that the only natural way to achieve and sustain a harder erection is to increase blood flow to the penis. Believe me, herbs are the fastest natural way to increase blood flow, and the safest and most effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Hypertension and Erectile Dysfunction

Friday Mar 5, 2010

Hypertension and erectile dysfunction are closely related in the same way as high blood sugar or coronary artery disease (CAD) creates sexual disorders. Erection of a penis depends upon an increased blood flow and high blood pressure affects this blood supply. With high pressure of blood, penis is unable to receive the required blood and fails to attain and sustain a sufficient erection required for satisfactory sexual activity.

Proper working of blood vessels requires nitric oxide which is released when brain emits signals of sexual arousal. Men with a long history of high blood pressure fail to produce optimal level of nitric oxide and the penis tissues can no more widen to accommodate extra supply of blood needed for erection. Hypertension and erectile dysfunction are serious medical problems and doctor’s advice must not be delayed.

Treatment of high blood pressure is a complex issue because of the secondary effects of the typical medicines. It has been realized that medicines taken to normalize high blood pressure interfere with the natural body mechanisms to cause impotency. Research statistics confirm this by stating that 80% of high blood pressure patients suffer from impotency or weak erections. Though some dietary and lifestyle changes have a positive influence on hypertension and erectile dysfunction but still it is recommended to opt for alternate remedies rather than the common medicines.

The theory behind hypertension and erectile dysfunction is simple to understand. The excess pressure in blood vessels hurt small spongy tissues in the penis and they get cracked. Though these cracks are repaired automatically by the body itself but as a result the vessels turn hard and thick. The thickness of penile arteries act as a barrier to the demand of excess blood required for erection. The same theory also states that male impotency depends on the severity of blood pressure and not on the longevity of the problem.

Erectile Dysfunction Part II – The Risk Factors of Erectile Dysfunction

Saturday Feb 27, 2010

As we mentioned in previous articles, with either mental or physical stimulation, your brain signals the nerve ending in the penis to release nitric oxide. Nitric oxide relaxes or dilates blood vessels, enabling them to open up and bring more blood to the penis and helping to create an erection. In this article, we will discuss the risk factors of erectile dysfunction:

1. Chronic health conditions
People suffering from chronic diseases have a high risk of erectile dysfunction. Chronic diseases such as:
a) Heart diseases are caused by cholesterol building up in the arteries and blood vessel resulting in inadequate blood flow into the penis.
b) Diabetes with unhealthy diet causes high levels of glucose build-up in the bloodstream resulting in narrowed arteries and blood vessels that prevent adequate blood from entering the penis.
c) Prostate enlargement and chronic prostate: Inflammation of the prostate also reduces the blood flow entering the penis resulting in erectile dysfunction.
Other chronic diseases affecting organs like the lung, liver, and kidney also can lead to erectile dysfunction because of inflammation, inadequate blood flow or hormonal imbalance.

2. Aging
Aging results in more testosterone to be converted to dihydro-testosterone causing erections to take longer to develop and to need more direct touch to the penis.

3. Nerve damage
It is obvious that any damage to the nerve that directly controls erections can cause temporarily erectile dysfunction.

4. Medication
The side effects of some medications used to treat high blood pressure, depression, and prostate enlarged may interfere with nerve impulses and reducing the blood flow to the penis.

5. Prolong cycling
Prolong cycling over an extended period and pressure from a bicycle seat compresses nerves and blood flow to the penis, leading to temporary erectile dysfunction.

6. Psychological conditions
Other psychological conditions such as depression, anxiety and stress also contributes to some cases of erectile dysfunction.

7. Substance abuse
Substance abuse such as smoking, alcohol, marijuana or other drugs often causes erectile dysfunction.

There are many other risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides that can cause erectile dysfunction. I hope this information will help. If you need more information of the above subject, please visit my home page at:

When is it Erectile Dysfunction and When Should You Seek Help

Monday Feb 22, 2010

Modern men have become aware of the term and condition of erectile dysfunction, which is typically known as impotence. A healthy young man does not experience erectile dysfunction. With age, a man may notice some changes like requiring more coaxing to get erect than it used to, it may take more direct stimulation of the penis, while merely a daydream or the proposition of sex was once enough. At times, the erection isn’t quite as firm as it once was, but it’s still good enough. These are considered as normal changes. So, it is important for all the males to know when is it erectile dysfunction and when should one seek help? Dr. Brunilda Nazario, MD, considers the scenarios given below:

Scenario 1 You come home one evening after a long and stressful day at work. Your partner wants to have sex. You think you’d like to also, but you have a problem getting an erection. The next time you try, everything is fine. In this case, your problem probably doesn’t need medical treatment, as long as it happens rarely. If it starts to happen more often, you may want to talk to your doctor about it.

Scenario 2 Sometimes when you try to have sex, you get only partially erect. Your erection isn’t rigid enough to enter your partner. In the most severe cases of erectile dysfunction, a man isn’t able to get even a slight erection. But there are degrees of this condition. Even mild erectile dysfunction is worth discussing with your doctor.

Scenario 3 You can get a good erection during foreplay, but after you start to have intercourse you lose it. This can be very frustrating for you and your partner. Even though you are able to get an erection, if it doesn’t last long enough to complete sexual intercourse you may have erectile dysfunction.

Scenario 4 Your doctor prescribes a new medication, and you notice that it’s now more difficult to get an erection than it was before you started taking it. Side effects of drugs cause up to 25% of erectile dysfunction cases. Blood pressure medicines are lifesavers, but erection problems are sometimes a side effect. Other medications that can cause erectile dysfunction include: Antidepressants, Antipsychotic drugs, Sedatives, Seizure medication.

Talk to your doctor about switching to a different drug that’s less likely to cause problems. Also ask about treatment options specifically for erectile dysfunction.

Scenario 5 You typically have several alcoholic drinks every night. It’s difficult for you to get an erection when you’ve been drinking. While a glass of wine may help you and your partner get in the mood, heavy drinking can really hamper your sexual performance as alcohol depresses the nervous system, which may cause erection problems if you’ve had too much to drink. If it only happens when you drink and the effect is temporary, you should limit your drinking and avoid treating the problem with erectile dysfunction medication. Keep in mind that alcohol also has long-term toxic effects on the nerves that can cause erectile dysfunction, even at times when you’re not drinking. Scenarios discussed above are the common situations in which men normally experience erectile dysfunction. Follow the advices to seek help before ED ruins the pleasure of your conjugal life. —————————————————————————————————-

Your Treatment Options For Erectile Dysfunction

Saturday Feb 20, 2010

Before you can begin treatment for erectile dysfunction, you will need to go
to your doctor for a physical examination. There are many preexisting conditions
that can cause erectile dysfunction, and different treatments work for different
conditions.

Prescription Medications

In recent years, prescription medications such as Viagra have played a huge
role in treating male impotence. What used to only be accomplished by an
injection of Alprostadil can now be accomplished by swallowing a pill. These
medications all work by allowing more blood to flow through the penis, thus
making it much easier for a male with erectile dysfunction to achieve an
erection. These medications have the added benefit of being less painful than a
shot, and unlike the shot erections only occur when a man is sexually aroused.

Psychotherapy

Some doctors estimate that as much as 80% of erectile dysfunction cases are
related to psychological issues such as anxiety. If your doctor feels that your
erectile dysfunction is psychological disorder you will most likely be referred
to a psychologist or psychotherapist for treatment.

Vacuum Devices

Vacuum devices work by forcing blood to flow into the penis, thus causing an
erection. Before the advent of prescription medications, vacuum
devices where a very common treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Penile Implants

In some cases of male impotence, the best treatment may be a prosthetic
penile implant. The implants cause an erection by inflating or by remaining
semi-rigid. Penile implants are one of the most technologically advanced
treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Herbal Remedies

In recent years a number of herbal
erectile dysfunction remedies have become available on the market.
Surprisingly, some of these treatments have proven to be very effective in
treating ED.

Vascular Surgery

In cases where impotence is caused by obstructed arteries vascular surgery
may be required in order to restore blood flow. The surgery is a fairly safe and
highly effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Conclusion

There are many different causes for erectile dysfunction, and just as many
different treatment options available. There is no single treatment that works
for every specific situation. That is why it is critical to have your doctor
perform a thorough examination before deciding on the treatment option that is
right for you.
