Birth Control

Saturday Feb 28, 2009

I’ve been working on this research for quite a while and have come up with some understanding which i want to share with you all hoping it is beneficial for you especially those of you who are planning their family life. The following is just one of the many birth control methods (condom, contraceptive pills, hormonal methods …) which my research proves to be the most non-ivasive, simple, and no-cost method for birth control. Yet, the effectiveness greatly depends on each individual practice. If you strictly follow the rules, it’s definitely effective.

Rhythm Method

This method is also known as fertility awareness, periodic abstinence or the calendar method. It is a way of avoiding pregnancy by simply not having intercourse during the days when you ovulate. If you wish to use this method of birth control, you will need to track your menstrual cycle to understand your body’s pattern and know precisely the days when you are most fertile. Then, by avoiding intercourse on those days or using other birth control options, such as condoms, it can prevent pregnancy.

How Does it Work?

This method of natural birth control is based on an individual’s menstrual cycle. Typically, sperm can survive inside the female reproductive system for around 5 to 7 days, but an egg can only live for 24 hours. Therefore, it is possible that your egg may get fertilized even 2 or 3 days after intercourse when ovulation occurs and sperm is already present in the body. However, 24 hours after you have ovulated, it is fairly safe to say that pregnancy will not occur until your next menstrual cycle. But how can you know just when you are most fertile or ovulate? There are a few hints that can help you know when you ovulate:

- Counting from the 1st day of your menstrual period, the ovulation day is the 14th day

- When you ovulate, you get great amount of vaginal discharge that looks and feels like raw egg whites (clear and slippery)

- You may also feel menstrual like cramping and have tender breasts

- Your basal body temperature rises (mostly in the morning, you feel that you’re having a higher body temperature)

Who Can Use It?

Those who have irregular cycles cannot really benefit from the Calendar Rhythm Method. Additionally, teenagers, who often do not have regular cycles yet, are also advised against using this method. Because this method requires the use of periodic abstinence, it is recommended more often for people in long-term relationships. Furthermore, the rhythm method offers no protection against STDs, like HIV and chlamydia. This is another reason why it is more often recommended for couples in long-term, monogamous relationships where both partners have tested free of STDs.

Reliability

There are many factors that make rhythm method a not very reliable way of birth control. Apart from the usual mistakes that anyone can make, like tracking your cycle incorrectly and having intercourse during fertile days or maybe unwillingness of a partner. Another reason for the increased failure rate is that you use past cycles to predict future cycles. In most cases, past patterns are sufficient in providing you with a guideline for future cycles. However, any changes to your lifestyle, such as taking medication, dealing with stress, illness, starting menopause or breastfeeding, and chances are that your cycle may change.

Advantages

As a natural birth control method, using the rhythm method to track your fertile days is relatively simple compared to using a contraceptive patch or receiving hormone injections.Other advantages are:- Almost anyone can practice it- Does not require any apparatus- Does not interfere with foreplay or intercourse- Has no effect on long-term fertility

Disadvantages

One of the biggest disadvantages of the rhythm method is that it does not protect against STDs. Other disadvantages include:

-Takes a lot of time to track the monthly cycle

-You cannot start using this method instantly and will need to note your cycles for at least 6 months first

-Partner may not be willing to cooperate.

Medication For Pain – Pain Relief Management And Prescription Medications

Tuesday Feb 24, 2009

Pain affects the body in many different ways and there are differences in individual pain perception and response to pain. Because of the multiple and diverse causes of pain, use of highly specialized abilities to promote comfort and to relieve pain is often required. Below are a few helpful tips on pain management; they are not a form of treatment.

The first and most important thing is to obtain a medical evaluation when acute or chronic pain is present. It is important to respect pain as the body’s means of signaling that it is not well. It may be a good idea to control factors contributing to pain for example, control stress in the environment and avoid excessive fatigue.

It is also recommended sometimes to practice stress reduction or diversionary behaviors when pain is present. As far as pain is concerned, be aware of personal preconceived notions that may affect your perception of pain. Do not drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery after taking pain medication because reflexes may be slowed and cognitive thinking decreased due to medication or treatment.

Also it is important to avoid alcohol and central nervous system depressants while on treatment since alcohol may interact with the medication and further depress the central nervous system, leading to respiratory failure.

Do not smoke without someone else present if you are taking pain relief medication because you may become tired due to the medication and fall asleep while smoking and start a house fire. Remember to work with assistance while taking pain medication because some pain treatments can cause drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision.

Furthermore do not take pain killers on an empty stomach; you may become nauseated if taken on an empty stomach. Only take it as recommended by your health care giver or as instructed on the prescription. If you are a breastfeeding mother check with your physician before taking pain relievers since many medications can be found in breast milk and may harm the baby.

Finally, follow appropriate procedures when experiencing pain by consulting approved practitioners to prevent risks of poisoning and overdose. Remember, pain is the body’s way of signaling to you that something is wrong. See you doctor or health adviser who may help you find out what may be wrong and advise you on what you need to do.

Weight Loss Options For the Clinically Obese

Friday Feb 20, 2009

Those who are struggling with clinical obesity are often tempted to turn to weight loss surgery as their first option. However, before you make this drastic choice, you should make sure that you have pursued all of your other options.

The Natural Way

The natural way to lose weight is to increase your caloric output while decreasing your caloric intake. Of course, this is easier said than done, and it does not lead to rapid weight loss. For some, losing weight the natural way does not create change fast enough to help with the serious health problems that come with obesity.

If you do try to go the natural route to deal with your obesity, you need to focus on eating fresh foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be a staple of your diet. You also need to eat whole grains, not refined grains. At least half of your grains should be whole grains. These help you to feel full and do not cause the blood sugar crashes common with refined grains. For your protein, choose poultry and lean meats. Eat more fish, as it contains healthy oils that your body needs. Beans, nuts, and seeds are alternative healthy sources of protein.

Increasing your caloric output is also essential to natural weight loss. If you are significantly overweight, this can be difficult, but even a brisk walk is considered exercise and will help. Make it your goal to spend 30 minutes in some sort of activity every day whenever possible. As you lose weight, increase the intensity of your workout. Keep it varied in order to encourage yourself to stick with it.

Weight Loss Drugs

Another alternative to weight loss surgery is taking a weight loss drug. There are both prescription and over the counter weight loss medications available. They work by either suppressing your appetite or blocking some of the fat that you eat from being absorbed into your body. These work in conjunction with lifestyle changes to help you lose weight more quickly. However, they can have uncomfortable side effects, so make sure you do your research before choosing to use weight loss drugs.

Weight Loss Surgery

If natural weight loss methods are not working fast enough and you are not able or willing to use weight loss drugs, you may need to consider weight loss surgery. However, this is only an option if your body mass index is 40 or higher. You may qualify if your BMI is 35 or higher if you have a serious health complication that is caused by your weight.

Gastric bypass is one weight loss surgery option. In this procedure, the physician will create a small stomach pouch by stapling the stomach and attaching the resulting pouch to the middle part of the small intestine. This limits both the amount of food you can eat by making the stomach smaller, and also the amount of calories your body absorbs by bypassing part of the small intestine. Portions of the stomach and intestine are removed, making this a permanent change.

Another popular weight loss surgery is the Lap Band surgery. LapBand is a gastric banding device that is placed around the stomach laparoscopically. It creates a small stomach pouch, thus limiting the amount of food that is eaten. Many patients choose Lap Band surgery over gastric bypass because it is far less invasive and does not permanently change the digestive system.

A third, rarely used option is a biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. This creates the small stomach pouch and connects it to the last part of the small intestine, bypassing most of the small intestine. It is rarely used because it puts patients at risk of malnutrition when compared to other weight loss surgery options. If you are considering weight loss surgery, be sure to discuss each of these three options with your doctor in detail so you can choose the best one for your body’s unique needs.

Allergy Medication And Other Treatment Options

Friday Feb 20, 2009

Being dependent on allergy medication can be difficult for anyone, as it would be great to just wake up without sneezing, itching and watery eyes, and general all around misery. It would probably also be nice to be able to go outdoors or smell some flowers without the same symptoms! But in truth we are very fortunate to live in a world where we have access to allergy medication so that we don’t need to suffer these symptoms, but of course some other treatment options are advisable as well.

Remember how allergy medication works when choosing your treatment method. Allergies are a sign that you immune system is not working properly; when you come into contact with something that you’re allergic to, your body responds the same way it does when fighting off an illness or germs. The immune system goes into overdrive and sends out what is called histamines, which react to the irritant. Antihistamines then stop this process and block these histamines so you don’t have this reaction. An allergy medication then stops your body from the reaction that causes your sensitivity to an allergy; it doesn’t cause your body to not be allergic anymore.

Most allergy medication is harmless and the process it creates is actually much healthier than suffering through allergy symptoms. Those histamines, since they are reacting to something that is not really a danger, become the irritant to a patient. Decongestants are different; long-term use can actually make symptoms worse and should not be used for chronic allergies. Some allergy medication is available as shots, and these usually help your body to adjust to its own reactions to allergies so that you no longer have the symptoms.

There are other options for those who don’t want to use just allergy medication. Usually treating your symptoms can be done with natural options. If you have skin allergies, warm baths and showers can help to ease your symptoms. Natural skin creams with oils such as aloe, sunflower oil, grape seed oil, and other organic ingredients can work better than harsh chemicals in most skin lotions. Aloe Vera will help rejuvenate and tone skin all over. Aloe Vera is a naturally cooling gel and the botanical ingredients work together to stimulate the blood circulation and naturally soften the skin.

For allergies of outdoor things such as pollen and ragweed, insulating the home with double-paned windows can help to keep these elements out of the house. Gargling with warm salt water can help to ease a closed throat. Vitamin C is nature’s protective nutrient, essential for defending the body against pollution and infection and enhances the bodies’ immune system. Beta Carotene protects the mucus membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs. It also helps protect Vitamin C from oxidation, which enables it to perform at optimum efficiency.

Of course, if you’ve been prescribed allergy medication or have severe allergies, it’s imperative that you take your meds and call emergency services if you have an allergy attack that keeps you from breathing. Allergies are very serious and can lead to anaphylactic shock and death, so it’s important that you pay attention to any and all symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.

Always consult your doctor before using this information.

Are the Medications I Am Taking For Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Going to Kill Me?

Wednesday Feb 18, 2009

Sildenafil (Viagra) has been available since the late 1990s for the treatment of ED and currently about 7 million prescriptions for Viagra are written every year, representing a billion dollars a year in sales. Like a lot of drugs, this one’s journey to the pharmacist’s shelf began in a quest to treat a different condition, in this case angina (heart disease). During trial studies researchers noticed that it had a positive effect on erection, which turned out to be stimulating news for Pfizer. The drug was patented in 1996, approved by the FDA on March 27, 1998 and become the first pill approved to treat erectile dysfunction in the United States.

Viagra works because it inhibits the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) enzyme, which results in an increase in blood flow in the corpus callosum of the penis, resulting in erection. Viagra has its peak effect in one hour and lasts about four hours.

Viagra has been shown to be highly effective for ED. Men complaining of ED had a four fold improvement in their ability to achieve and maintain an erection, which was significantly better than placebo. There was also a doubling of satisfaction with intercourse.

Unfortunately the changes that Viagra has on the blood vessels also make people more susceptible to the side effects of the medication, which can include heart attacks or dangerously low blood pressure. Viagra can be very dangerous when taken with nitroglycerin, a medication for heart disease and chest pain that also dilates the blood vessels; the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Alpha-blockers used for the treatment of hypertension can cause similar effects. Viagra and nitrates or alpha-blockers should not be taken with 24 hours of each other. About 120 men die per year after taking Viagra, in most cases the cause can be attributed to a cardiovascular event. Other side effects are headache, flushing, and dyspepsia. An infrequent side effect is an erection that doesn’t go away.

Another rare complication of Viagra is blindness. This is caused by a condition called nonarteric anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION is caused when a blood vessel is blocked off by a blood clot or atherosclerosis. Similar problems elsewhere in the body lead to heart attacks and strokes. But when the blood vessel leads to the optic nerve, vision loss or blindness in the eye can be the result. The FDA has received 50 or so case reports about the drug causing NAION. This conduction often clears by itself with time.

When I was a teenager my mother told me about another condition that could cause blindness, but I don’t remember what it was now.

Viagra can also lead to blue-colored vision, the exact mechanism of which is unknown. This condition also gradually improves with time.

Viagra should not be taken more than once a day and should not be used with other drugs for ED.

Online Drugs From Canada

Wednesday Feb 18, 2009

Many U.S. residents now order their prescription drugs online from Canadian pharmacies. The number of prescriptions filled this way had increased steadily for about 5 years but over the last couple of years has decreased somewhat. Many people find that purchasing prescription drugs online has certain advantages. Some of the potential benefits are: ease of price comparison between various pharmacies, cost savings, privacy protection, and convenience if you do not have a retail pharmacy close to you or if there are physical limitations which make it difficult to visit a community pharmacy. All therapeutic classes of drugs are available online: medications for depression, pain medications, drugs to treat high blood pressure and more. There are dozens of legitimate online pharmacies located in the U.S. and Canada that can safely fill your prescriptions, usually at a real cost savings. Many U.S. residents are pleasantly surprised when they find that they can often save hundreds of dollars every year just by ordering their drugs online.

Sometimes when you hear someone talk about an online pharmacy what they actually are referring to are the large mail order pharmacies that many employers now force their employees to use. But what we mean by online pharmacy is the type that anyone interested in saving money can use to buy their prescription drugs. This type of independent online pharmacy will treat you as a real customer and patient not just another number. Most of the U.S. based online pharmacies are also able to bill your insurance programs if you have that type of coverage. Easy internet based ordering and rapid home delivery make this online route a good alternative for many people!

Most U.S. residents will probably need to use a Canadian pharmacy if they really want to save a significant amount on their prescription costs. If you live close enough to Canada you can even do this in person. This is what many people living in border states do (this also pertains somewhat to Mexico but is beyond the topic of this article). The reason that Canadian drugs can cost substantially less is because drug companies often sell their products to pharmacies and pharmacy wholesalers in other countries for much less than in the U.S. In many cases the foreign pharmacy will pay 1/10 what a U.S. pharmacy would pay for the exact same drug. The cost to Canadian pharmacies is not always this low and may certainly be higher than a pharmacy in a third world country would pay.

While it is technically illegal to bring (import) drugs into the U.S. from Canada or any other foreign country, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not appear to be concerned about certain types of prescription drugs being ordered online therefore U.S. Customs usually will not bother shipments of drugs coming from Canada as long as the drug shipped is: for personal use, not a controlled substance and would typically be considered no more than a 90 day supply. Prescriptions meeting these general criteria have been essentially left alone since October 9th 2006 as part of a specific policy decision of the government. In reality it has been found to be very unlikely that a shipment of drugs from an online Canadian pharmacy would be bothered although shipments of prescriptions from any other country run a very high risk of being seized! Customs officials seem to be more concerned about randomly looking for shipments from Canada that may contain counterfeit drugs or medications with unapproved, ineffective or potentially dangerous ingredients.

You need to make sure that the prescription drug you get is actually being shipped from a licensed Canadian pharmacy and that the pharmacy you are dealing with is not an intermediary for some distant foreign pharmacy in which case the drugs may certainly be of questionable quality. You can ask for the credentials of the pharmacy and should expect them to answer any and all questions that you have. If anything about their business makes you uncomfortable then look elsewhere!

On very important thing to remember is to never buy a prescription drug online without a valid prescription. A prescription that is sent to you as a result of some type of interaction with a distant online or telephone ‘doctor’ should always be avoided. Visit a real doctor face to face and get a real prescription from him! This is important if the drugs are coming from Canada, because if an illegal (no valid prescription from a licensed doctor) order is seized you could end up in real trouble possibly paying thousands of dollars in fines and even potentially ending up in jail. This is especially true if the drug shipped to you is a controlled substance such as Vicodin. If your prescription is for a controlled substance never try to get it shipped to the U.S. from Canada or any other country this is strictly against the law as stated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) You must use your local pharmacy or at least an online pharmacy located in the U.S. You may be able to get the controlled substance shipped to you from Canada but it is definitely not worth the risk. The U.S. Customs is watching for this and will take action!

Pain Relief Tips – Are Your Pills Adding to Your Pain? – Nurse’s Medication Guide

Wednesday Feb 18, 2009

Have you been carrying around pain for a long time or even a short time and can’t seem to get rid of it or feel any relief? I know many people who finally got rid of their pain, or diminished it greatly by stopping one or more of the medications they were taking. Pills often don’t help and can cause you more pain and grief.

I’ve found that often pains can be combined and the sum of the pain is going to be greater than the sum of the two parts of pain you’re having. I know this for myself and for the many patients I’ve seen.

Do you know if you’re having just one source of pain or is it from combined sources?

What symptoms are you having? You want to pinpoint the one or more causes of your pain in case it’s medication-related.

Hidden sources can come from a variety of reasons of course. A bad diet with nutritional deficiencies for example or as I’m discussing here it could be from your medications, prescription pain medication or painkillers. Over-the-counter and prescription medications of all types can be sources that you may not be aware of.

If you’re taking a lot of medications, please stop reading after this article and go take a look at them. Do you really need all of them? Often I’ve seen patients take medications they don’t need or they don’t know what they’re taking them for. You need to be aware of the problems that can develop and cause you additional pain because of side effects adverse reactions or the combining effect of one or more medications.

Even if you know what your medications are for they may still be a source of pain. There are many medications that can cause stomach, chest, back, hip, leg, joint and muscle pain, generalized body aches and pains and so on and you don’t want to add to an underlying pain and make yourself feel worse.

Please take a look at your pills and medications today. You may be taking many that do not relieve your pain at all or you’re taking for some other purpose.

Are you taking any new medications? It’s recommended by many drug-watching organizations not to take any medication that hasn’t been on the market for at least five years.

If you’re taking several drugs take your list to your pharmacist and have them checked to make sure they can be taken together. Discuss any allergies you have. Try to get all your drugs from the same doctor and same pharmacy.

All drugs have risks. There is such thing as a safe drug. Seek natural solutions every way you can.

Pain medications and other medications and drugs are only one source of additional pain but it’s one that you can evaluate now. There are many other hidden sources you may not have thought of that you can get rid of too. Give it some thought and get pain relief or stop your pain altogether.

Obesity Facts

Tuesday Feb 17, 2009

Obesity is a worldwide health problem which is defined as the excess accumulation of body fat. Many people think that it is a state of overweight, but that’s not exactly true. Being overweight indicates an excess amount of weight that includes bone, muscle, fat and water. But, obese persons have a surplus of body fat. According to health professionals, a man having over 25% body fat is obese, while a woman is obese if she has more than 30% of fat.

Generally, the level of obesity is determined using a value known as body mass index (BMI).

BMI is defined as weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters. A normal BMI value is between 19 and 25 Kg/m2. In a mild obesity state, one has a BMI value of 30 Kg/m2 or more. But, severe obesity begins when the BMI value reaches 40 Kg/m2 or more.

Obese people always suffer from a number of health problems and diseases. The general health issues are heart disease, hypertension, non-insulin dependent diabetes, gallstones, sleep apnea, reproductive disorders, osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints, and some types of cancers. Therefore, obesity needs careful attention for both prevention and treatment.

Sedentary lifestyle, consumption of pre-packaged food, and certain medical disorders are the causes of obesity. Along with weight loss medication, diet and exercise treatments are the preferred treatment options for mildly obese patients. Obesity surgery such as Lap Band or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is suitable for some who have failed to lose fat by any other method.

Today, obesity has become the number one public health issue in the United States. Researches show that obesity and overweight are the other important causes of preventable death in America, close behind tobacco intake. Around 1/3rd off all Americans are overweight people and an added 1/3rd are obese. According to the National Institute of Health, 300,000 deaths per year are caused due to obesity.

Antibiotics Enable Bacterial Mutations

Monday Feb 16, 2009

There are millions of nursing home patients in the United States. So many times when a nurse calls a physician regarding a patients cold symptoms or slightly elevated temperature, a doctor gives an order for an antibiotic to treat these symptoms, and usually a nurse is calling the physician to request a cough syrup, or to just inform the doctor of the patients condition. But why do the doctors order antibiotics so frequently over the phone, just because nurses have to inform them of changes in a patients condition? And if the nurses did not report these changes, which are common in the elderly, and a patient had a serious life threatening condition, the nurse would be neglecting the patient.

It is no wonder that in a few weeks, we are checking these patients for Clostridium Difficile Infection. Antibiotic sickness is at an all time high. If you take your infant to the pediatrician, because of cold symptoms, they will usually tell you it is a virus, and they are usually right, your child will probably fight the virus and improve. But, in the elderly, it is unusual for a physician to let the elderly patient fight off the virus on their own, this may be due to the fact that the physician is unable to see the patient, or the families are insisting on antibiotic treatment.

We need serious change here, because your child may need the antibiotic that is so frequently over prescribed by these doctors, for these common colds in the elderly population. By the time your child needs this frivolously prescribed antibiotic for an ear infection or a life threatening infection to save his or her life, the bacteria your child has may be resistant to this particular antibiotic because of overuse of this medicine. If they would order a chest x-ray or a urine culture first, or whatever testing would be indicated according to the symptoms, that would be a start in the war against over prescribing antibiotics. We already have a problem with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium Difficile Infection and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus, what is next? Serious guidelines for prescribing antibiotics must be enforced.
